Against a brilliant gold-leaf background, an elderly, bearded Saint John kneels on a strip of green earth, his body angled toward the right. He wears a light undergarment and a long, flowing red mantle that he holds up with both hands, using the cloth as a barrier to receive the small, dark, studded book being offered by an angel. The angel, emerging from the upper right, wears a plum-colored robe over a light tunic and possesses a halo, mirroring the green halo surrounding John. The scene is framed by a rectangular border decorated with repeating dark stylized floral motifs on a red and purple background.

This miniature is a seminal work from the Reichenau school of illumination, exemplifying Ottonian artistic production under the patronage of Henry II. It visualizes the visionary experience described in the Book of Revelation, where the prophet is commanded to take and eat the 'little book' (Apocalypse 10:9).
