Christ Appearing to Saint John (Bamberg Apocalypse)

A tall, central figure of Christ, wearing a purple cloak over a white robe with a golden halo, stands upon a purple ground. A double-edged sword extends horizontally from his mouth; his left hand holds a small box, and his right hand gestures toward seven floating gold stars. He is flanked by seven tall, red-stemmed candlesticks arranged against a brilliant gold-leaf background. In the lower right, Saint John the Evangelist, depicted as a smaller figure with a yellow halo and wearing a dark mantle, looks upward with hands raised toward the vision. The ground is divided into a raised purple dais and a thin strip of green grass at the base.

This illumination illustrates the vision of the Son of Man from the opening of the Apocalypse of John (Revelation 1:12-16), a foundational text for Christian apocalyptic tradition and medieval visionary literature.
