This is a black-and-white woodcut historiated initial letter 'S', set against a plain background. This decorative initial appears in Athanasius Kircher's 'Oedipus Aegyptiacus', a foundational text of 17th-century Hermeticism and Egyptomania that attempted to synthesize ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs with Christian and Neoplatonic theology.
