Quaratesi Polyptych

This five-panel altarpiece features central figures of the Madonna and Child set against a shimmering gold background with ornate punchwork. Below the main panels, a series of small narrative scenes illustrate the life and miracles of Saint Nicholas, including a dramatic depiction of a ship at sea. The upper pinnacles contain medallions featuring God the Father, the Annunciation, and various prophets.

This work represents the peak of the International Gothic style in Florence just years before the arrival of the Greek scholars who sparked the Neoplatonic revival; it serves as a primary example of the visual and religious environment of Florence immediately preceding Marsilio Ficino.
