A large, decorative initial letter P is illuminated in shades of green and pink. This "P" begins the word Pridie (Recently). Recently, while I was separated a little from the common crowd and almost free from other cares, I wrote a small book in high praise of the female sex and for the comfort of my friends, rather than for the great benefit of the state.
But while I was turning it over in my mind—to whom I should first send it so that it would not wither in my possession through idleness, and so that, supported by the favor of another, it might venture more safely into the public eye—I realized it should not be sent to a male prince.
Instead, since it speaks about women, it ought to be destined for some distinguished woman. As I searched for one more worthy than all others, there came to mind that radiant Italian star iubar original: "iubar." This term literally means a beam of light or radiance; Boccaccio uses it here to describe the Queen's brilliant reputation. and the singular glory not only of women but also of kings: Joanna, the most serene Queen of Jerusalem and Sicily. Joanna I of Naples (1325–1382) was a powerful and controversial monarch. Boccaccio’s dedication highlights her status as a "ruling woman" to justify his subject matter. Considering both the brilliance of her illustrious lineage and ancestors, and the new praises she has sought for herself with a brave heart, I was seized by the desire to send it to her...
