26 As the shame of a thief when he is caught, so shall the sons of Israel be ashamed, they and their kings, and their princes, and their priests, and their prophets.

27 They said to the wood, Thou art my father, and to the stone, Thou hast begotten me; and they turned their backs to me, and not their faces; and in the time of their afflictions they will say, Arise and save us.

28 And where are thy gods, which thou hast made for thyself? Shall they arise and save thee in the time of thy affliction? For according to the number of thy cities were thy gods, O Judah, and according to the number of the streets of Jerusalem they sacrificed to Baal.

29 Why do you speak to me? You have all been impious, and you have all transgressed against me, saith the Lord.

30 In vain have I struck your children, you received no instruction; the sword has devoured your prophets like a destroying lion, and you have not feared.

31 Hear the word of the Lord: Thus saith the Lord, Have I become a desert to Israel, or a land laid waste? Why has my people said, We will not be ruled, and we will not come to thee anymore?

32 Will a bride forget her adornment, or a maiden her breast-band? But my people have forgotten me, for days without number.

33 What good thing will you pursue in your ways, to seek love? Not so; but you have also done evil to defile your ways,

34 And in thy hands was found the blood of innocent souls; I did not find them in holes, but under every oak tree.

35 And thou hast said, I am innocent; but let his wrath turn away from me; behold, I am entering into judgment with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned.

36 For thou hast despised greatly the repeating of thy ways; and thou shalt be ashamed by Egypt, just as thou wast ashamed by Assur original: Ἀσσούρ; traditionally Assyria..

37 For thou shalt go forth from thence also, and thy hands shall be upon thy head; for the Lord has rejected thy hope, and thou shalt not prosper in it.

CHAP. 3. 3.

1 If a man puts away his wife, and she departs from him, and becomes another man’s, shall she return to him anymore? Shall not that woman be greatly defiled? And thou hast committed fornication with many shepherds, and art thou returning to me? saith the Lord.

2 Lift up thine eyes to the straight path, and see, where hast thou not been defiled? In the ways thou hast sat for them like a lonely crow, and thou hast defiled the land with thy fornications and with thy wickedness.
