25 I looked, and behold there was no man, and all the birds of the heaven were frightened.

26 I saw, and behold Carmel was a desert, and all the cities were burned with fire from the face of the Lord, and from the face of his anger of wrath they have vanished.

27 Thus saith the Lord, The whole land shall be a desert, but a full end I will not make.

28 Upon these things let the earth mourn, and let the heaven darken from above; because I have spoken, and I will not repent, I have purposed, and I will not turn away from it.

29 From the voice of the horseman, and the drawn bow the whole country has retreated; they went into the caves, and in the groves they hid, and upon the rocks they climbed; every city was forsaken, no man dwells in them.

30 And what wilt thou do? If thou puttest on crimson, and adornest thyself with golden ornament; if thou anointest thy eyes with stibium original: στίβι; a cosmetic used to darken the eyelids., in vain is thy beautifying; thy lovers have rejected thee, they seek thy soul.

31 Because I have heard a voice as of one in labor, of thy groaning, as of one bringing forth her first child; the voice of the daughter of Zion shall be loosened, and she shall let down her hands; Woe is me, because my soul faints for those who have been slain.

CHAP. 5. 5.

1 RUN to and fro in the ways of Jerusalem, and see, and know, and seek in its squares, if you find, if there is one doing judgment, and seeking faithfulness, and I will be merciful to them, saith the Lord.

2 The Lord lives, they say, therefore do they not swear in falsehoods?

3 O Lord, thine eyes are for faithfulness; thou hast scourged them, and they did not ache, thou hast consumed them, and they refused to receive instruction; they made their faces harder than a rock, and they refused to return.

4 And I said, Perhaps they are poor, because they could not, because they did not know the way of the Lord, and the judgment of God.

5 I will go to the great ones, and will speak to them, because they have known the way of the Lord, and the judgment of God; and behold they with one accord have broken the yoke, they have torn asunder the bonds.

6 Therefore a lion from the forest has struck them, and a wolf has destroyed them even to the houses, and a leopard has watched over their cities; all those going out from them shall be hunted, because they have multiplied their impieties, they have strengthened, in their backslidings.

7 How for these things shall I be merciful to thee? Thy children have forsaken me, and were swearing by those who are not gods; and I fed them, and
