This new edition of the text and translation of On the Administration of the Empire original: "D. A. I.", an abbreviation for the Latin title "De Administrando Imperio", which first appeared in Budapest eighteen years ago, is now published by the Harvard University Center for Byzantine Studies at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C. It is the first in a series of texts to be produced by this institute. We wish to thank Dumbarton Oaks for its generosity, as well as the many scholars whose suggestions have helped us expand our critical apparatus A standard feature in scholarly books that lists different versions of words found in various historical manuscripts. and improve our translation.
Despite making minor corrections, we have been able to keep the same page numbers and the alignment of the Greek text from the first edition. This was done so that the Commentary¹—which was written specifically for use with the first edition—can be used just as easily with this second version.
