The Greek text in this volume is based upon the Clark Manuscript original: "Codex Clarkianus"; a famous 9th-century manuscript of Plato's works and the Venice Manuscript original: "Codex Venetus". Deviations from the readings of these manuscripts are noted in the margin at the foot of the page. In most instances disagreement between these two manuscripts, and occasionally readings found in inferior manuscripts or in ancient quotations, as well as corrections emendations: scholarly proposals to fix perceived errors in a manuscript offered by modern scholars, are noted, even when they have not affected the text chosen. The following abbreviations are employed:
| B | = Clark or Bodleian Manuscript, written 895 A.D. |
| T | = Venice Manuscript, Appendix class 4, manuscript 1; twelfth century. |
| W | = Vienna Manuscript 54, Greek Supplement 7. |
| D | = Venice Manuscript 185. |
| G | = Venice Manuscript, Appendix class 4, manuscript 54. |
| b t w | = later hands referring to corrections or notes added by later scribes of B T W. |
The brief introductions aim merely at supplying such information as may aid the reader to appreciate these particular dialogues.
