— The text in this volume is based upon that of Stallbaum Gottfried Stallbaum (1793–1861), a German philologist famous for his editions of Plato's works, and all variations from his readings are noted in the margin at the foot of the pages. In some cases, deviations from the reading of the manuscripts have been noted, even when adopted by Stallbaum. In the introductions to the separate dialogues an attempt has been made to discuss the philosophy of Plato; or by analyzing them so as to supply such information as is needed for the intelligent reading of those particular dialogues. For further illustration and information the reader is referred to the General Introduction by Mr. W. M. Lindsay of Trinity College, Cambridge.
