have earned. Some of his inventions may be unrealizable, but it is hard to find one that is certainly futile. There are flaws in his arguments; to state them clearly and fairly is to win the privilege of taking part in a discussion at the Academy.

Each of the dialogues is a self-contained whole. The order in which they have been mentioned in this Introduction is that which agrees best in the main with modern views of Plato’s mental progress, though the succession in some instances is uncertain.
