A circular engraved emblem by Simon Gribelin. At the top of the outer border sits a sphinx The sphinx often represents mystery or the riddles of human nature in Enlightenment iconography. The center of the emblem depicts a radiant sun containing the Greek word "Hypolepsis" original: ΥΠΟΛΗΨΙΣ; meaning "Opinion," "Assumption," or "Mental Apprehension" in its rays, shining over a landscape featuring water and distant mountains. The bottom of the decorative frame contains a small medallion showing a face or mask. Printed around the emblem are references: "See" original: Vid. (top left), "Below" original: Inf. (top right), "Volume 3" (bottom left), "Engraved by Simon Gribelin" (bottom center), and "Pages 198, 199" (bottom right).
