original: "ENTHUSIASM"; in the 18th century, this term often referred to excessive or irrational religious fervor.
An elaborate, dark copperplate engraving featuring three horizontal sections. The top section contains a central oval vignette of figures in a landscape, flanked by trophies of the arts and sciences, including a globe, books, musical instruments, and a painter's palette. The large middle section depicts an allegorical or classical scene with several figures in a shadowed interior or landscape. At the bottom left of this central panel is the text "P. 14, 16, 18, 46, &c." and at the bottom right is the engraver's signature "Simon Gribelin engraved this." The bottom section of the frame features a central radiating sun motif positioned above a dome-like shape, all set within dense, ornate acanthus leaf scrollwork.
