The Key of Solomon

In this paragraph the following regulation or order occurs:—

We command, and I command everyone into whose hand this composition comes, that he shall not give it to any person unless that person be humble, a master of secrets original Hebrew: ba'al sod (בעל סוד); refers to someone initiated into mystical or esoteric knowledge, and diligent in his actions regarding this craft. And I adjure him by the Living God and the Creator of the World, that just as he guards his own soul, he shall guard this book, so as not to reveal it to those who are unworthy. And if he does not listen to this, I shall cast my supplication before Him who graced me with this knowledge referring to God as the source of wisdom, that he [the transgressor] shall not succeed in all his actions and desires which he seeks to perform. The following passage occurs in this paragraph:—

And when the practitioner of the craft and the experiment wishes to begin any matter of this craft, he should strive to have three companions or at least one. And know that in every craft in which circles original: igulot (עגולות); referring to the drawing of a protective magic circle on the ground are made, he will need at least three companions. And if he does not have a companion, he shall take a dog in his company, tied near him. In some occult traditions, if the required number of human participants for a ritual cannot be found, a loyal animal is substituted to provide the necessary presence or "energy" for the circle.
