the well-deserved efforts and labor of Doctor Hieronymus Bock Hieronymus Bock (1498–1554) was a pioneering German physician and botanist; he is considered one of the "fathers of botany.", since he has practiced and applied himself to this trade for many years from his youth. He first prepared this book, and has now corrected it with great diligence, improved it, and increased it with many herbs. I have also applied my own expenses for your benefit. Do not heed what some, without certain grounds, say or write against this experienced and well-deserved man, belittling him and others so that they alone might be seen. Therefore, dear reader, you should compare original: "conferiren" this book against others yourself; read and compare with diligence. I fully believe that you will find, clearly and in deed, that this work was not in vain, but may well be used and tolerated alongside others. The work itself shall give testimony of its master, etc. If your favor and goodwill are found in this, something more excellent regarding shrubs, hedges, trees, and perhaps higher and more subjects from the aforementioned gentleman may be brought forth shortly, not without your special use and advantage.
