Even though the Jewish people original: "Iudaica" were stirred up against us with dire rage, so that we could never receive anything from them regarding the more secret and expository doctrine of the Holy Scripture of the Old Testament in the Church, it is nevertheless entirely necessary that, before the coming of Christ, the true sense of Scripture was explained by upright and holy men under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, both in authority and in reason. This remains true even though that same sense had been, on the contrary, stained by false traditions from the depraved scribes and Pharisees. For otherwise, it could never have happened that Christ, the King of the Jews, would have rightfully rebuked the Pharisees and high priests for their evil and false understanding of the sacred texts, unless they had refused to understand those things according to the consensus of the universal original: "catholicae," here referring to the collective body of faithful believers before the formal Christian era church.
