AVEBURY,
A
TEMPLE
OF THE
British DRUIDS,
With Some Others,
DESCRIBED.
Wherein is a more detailed account of the first and patriarchal
religion; and of the settlement of the BRITISH ISLANDS.
Although slow-moving age hinders me, and many things escape me that I saw in my early years, yet I remember more original Latin: "Quamvis obstet mihi tarda vetustas, Multaque me fugiant primis spectata sub annis, Plura tamen memini" — from Ovid's Metamorphoses, Book 12, lines 182-183. Stukeley uses this quote to reflect on the challenges of recovering ancient history from the distant past. — Ovid, Metamorphoses XII. v. 182.
By WILLIAM STUKELEY, M.D. William Stukeley (1687–1765) was a pioneering English antiquary who was among the first to perform field surveys of Stonehenge and Avebury. Though his observations were meticulous, his theories—like attributing these sites to the Druids—are now considered historically inaccurate as the sites predate the Druids by thousands of years.
