A person with an evil heart is entirely unfit for the Order. Why? Because he is unfit for friendship. If a Brother becomes aware of such a member, he may safely believe that this person entered the Lodge through improper means, or because his true nature was not sufficiently recognized.
It is difficult to determine all the characteristics of a good heart; even the most evil disposition original: "Gemüth"; a term referring to the seat of emotions, character, and soul may borrow the appearance of goodness for a time. In the meantime, however, one rule remains certain: a person who does not feel, who is not compassionate, and who does everything only in relation to himself and out of self-interest, never possesses a good heart.
The necessary qualities that the Lodge demands of its members constitute the virtues of a F. M. Freemason (Freimaurer); virtues which can also make him happy outside of the Order. A part
