appertains: Greetings. Our beloved Lord

him our letters of permission necessary

ably to treat the Petitioner, we have per-
mitted and do permit by these Presents, In legal documents, "these Presents" refers to the document itself. to
have the said Work printed as many times
as shall seem good to him and to have it sold
and distributed throughout our Kingdom, during
the term of five consecutive years, count-
ing from the day of the date of these Presents.
We prohibit &c. The standard "etc." in these licenses implies a strict prohibition against any other printer or bookseller pirating the work under penalty of heavy fines and confiscation of stock. Given at Paris the sixth
