Christian IV (1577–1648) was the King of Denmark and Norway. He was a staunch Protestant who would eventually lead a military intervention into the Thirty Years' War to support the Protestant cause and protect his interests in northern Germany.
Christian, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (the "Mad Halberstädter"), and his brother Frederick Ulrich were significant German Protestant leaders. Christian was a particularly fervent military commander during this period.
Ambrosio Spinola was a Genoese nobleman and one of the most famous Spanish generals of the age. In 1621, he was leading the Spanish Army of Flanders in the conquest of the Palatinate.
