The fifth and last volume of the Cosmos, for which this introduction is intended, concludes the presentation of telluric phenomena in their strictest sense. In terms of both its content and the scope in which it is to be considered, it offers—according to the original plan of this work—a somewhat self-contained whole: that which is usually called physical geography original: "physische Erdbeschreibung". It was long my wish to have this 5th volume appear as the second section of the 4th, and simultaneously with that first section, as a counterpart to the previous third, uranological original: "uranologischen" – relating to the study of the heavens or astronomy volume; however, the even more unpleasant delay in publication caused by the fulfillment of this wish presented itself as an obstacle.
