Now, the author states the purpose of the book—That which was previously earned—because of the eternal connection between the relative pronouns "that" and "which." For this reason, whatever was earned in a previous life, produced by the self and the body original: "ātmadehajanitam", whether good or bad, is called Fate Daiva: the accumulated fruit of past actions. In this life, in this present existence, when the determination of the year, month, and day occurs, a living being surely attains the ultimate ripening original: "vipāka" or result; this is the meaning. Therefore, having reflected and deliberated upon this, I shall speak of the results produced by the year. What kind of results? Those agreed upon by all the wise scholars original: "sūribhiḥ", and furthermore, those which are clear, manifest, and inspiring.
Now he explains the method for calculating the "heap of days" Ahargana: the total number of days elapsed from a fixed epoch to a specific date and other factors—The number of years elapsed—The group of years that have passed since the time of birth should be set down in four places. When the birth era The Shaka era year of birth is subtracted from the desired current era year, the remainder is the elapsed years. As it is said: "Having ascertained the birth era, subtract it from the desired era; the remainder found there shall be the group of elapsed years." || 1 ||
Then, in sequence, the elapsed years are multiplied by 375, 15, 31, and 30. Below these, one should place sixty, and above, they should be joined with the results of the birth day-count and the minutes original: "nāḍikā"—that is, the day-count at the time of birth and the time elapsed from sunrise. This becomes the elapsed collection of days for the start of the desired year. What kind? Exactly as it was calculated from whichever astronomical manual original: "granthataḥ" was used on the day of birth; that is the meaning. This is what is being expressed: the calculation must remain consistent with the original manual used at the time of birth.
