I certainly sought to hide it with diligence from the beginning, and at the first printing: partly to give the readers, through such concealment of my name, room to judge the writing itself without partiality and without any inclination for or against the author; and partly to avoid the offense of some honest and upright minds, whom I honor and love, who in good faith hold the mistaken opinion regarding the power of the devil and the frequently scattered narratives about it to be true, and who might easily take offense that a teacher holds, in their opinion, such objectionable theses and defends them in a public writing.
