This folio is dedicated to a large, elaborate illuminated initial original: "illuminated initial"; possibly the letter 'S' or 'B'. The letter is formed by thick, white-work white-work: a decorative technique using white pigment to create intricate, lace-like patterns or vines vines or scrolls that entwine two human figures in active, gymnastic poses.
The background of the letter is split horizontally into two distinct color fields: a deep red in the upper half and a sage green in the lower half. This composition features an inhabited scroll inhabited scroll: a style of decoration where the foliage or vines contain human or animal figures entwined within them.
This decorative program is characteristic of high-quality Romanesque Romanesque: the artistic style of medieval Europe from the 11th and 12th centuries, known for its bold colors and dynamic, stylized figures manuscripts, where such "inhabited initials" served to mark the start of significant text divisions.
