The two drawings are by the Japanese artist, Keishū Takénouchi. The frontispiece frontispiece: an illustration positioned at the beginning of a book, usually facing the title page illustrates the scene in the story “Yuki-Onna” original: “Yuki-Onna” (The Snow Woman, a supernatural spirit or yōkai from Japanese folklore), described on page 113; the drawing facing page 180 illustrates the Butterfly Dance original: “Butterfly Dance” (known in Japanese as Kochō-no-mai, a graceful, traditional dance often performed by children at religious festivals or at the Imperial Court), described on page 203.
