Animal Magnetism original: "magnétisme animal"; This was a 18th-century medical theory proposed by Franz Mesmer. It suggested that an invisible natural force or "fluid" existed in all living things and that imbalances in this fluid caused illness, which could be treated through the influence of a "magnetizer."
