If in several places I allow myself to adopt a dogmatic tone, it is not because I am overconfident in my own judgment; it is solely to be clearer and more precise, to avoid useless circumlocutions, and to not leave those who consent to take me as a guide in uncertainty. No one feels the imperfection of my work better than I; there are necessarily many omissions. I will receive with gratitude any critical observations that one might be pleased to address to me, and I will take advantage of them to correct my faults and to add, in a second edition, what may have appeared to be missing in this first attempt.
