8. For one individual to act upon another, there must exist between them a moral and physical sympathy, just as there exists one between all the members of an animate body. Physical sympathy is established by means that we shall indicate: moral sympathy by the desire one has to do good to someone who desires to receive it, or by ideas and wishes which, occupying both equally, form a communication of sentiments between them. When this sympathy is well established between two individuals, we say that they are in rapport state of magnetic connection/mutual influence.
9. Thus, the first condition for magnetizing is the will; the second is the confidence that the one who magnetizes has in his own strength; the third is benevolence or the desire to do good. One of these qualities can supplement the others to a certain point; but for the action of magnetism to be at once energetic and salutary, all three conditions must be united.
