from the place where thou now art: to the north and the south, to the east and the west. All the land which thou seest, I will give to thee and to thy seed forever. And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth. If any man can count the dust of the earth, thy seed also shall be able to be counted. Arise therefore and walk through the land, in the length and in the breadth thereof: for to thee will I give it. So Abram moving his tabernacle, came and dwelt by the vale of Mambre, which is in Hebron. And he built there an altar to the Lord.

C. XIV. It came to pass in that time that Amraphel king of Sennaar, and Arioch king of Pontus, and Chodolaomor king of the Elamites, and Thadal king of the nations, entered into war against Bala king of Sodom, and against Bersa king of Gomorrah, and against Sennaar king of Adama, and against Saneber king of Seboim, and against the king of Bala, which is Segor. All these came together in the woody vale, which now is the Salt Sea. For twelve years they had served Chodolaomor, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled against him. Therefore in the fourteenth year, Chodolaomor and the kings that were with him came and smote the Raphaim in Astaroth, and Carnaim, and the Zuzim with them, and the Emim in Sabe Cariathaim, and the Chorreans in the mountains of Seyr, as far as the plains of Pharan, which is in the wilderness. And returning they came to the fountain of Mephat, which is Cades, and smote all the region of the Amalechites, and the Amorites who dwelt in Asasonthamar. And the king of Sodom, and the king of Gomorrah, and the king of Adama, and the king of Seboim, and also the king of Bala, which is Segor, went out and set their battle array against them in the woody vale, namely against Chodolaomor king of the Elamites, and Thadal king of the nations, and Amraphel
king of Sennaar, and Arioch king of Pontus, four kings against five. Now the woody vale had many pits of bitumen. And the king of Sodom and the king of Gomorrah turned their backs, and fell there, and those who remained fled to the mountain. And they took all the substance of the Sodomites and Gomorrians, and all that pertains to food, and went away. Also Loth and his substance, the son of Abram's brother, who dwelt in Sodom. And behold, one that had escaped told Abram the Hebrew, who dwelt in the vale of Mambre the Amorite, brother of Eschol, and brother of Aner. For these had made a league with Abram. Which when Abram had heard, namely that Loth his brother was taken, he numbered his trained servants born in his house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them as far as Dan. And dividing his company, he rushed upon them by night. And he smote them, and pursued them as far as Soba, and Phoenicia, which is on the left hand of Damascus. And he brought back all the substance, and Loth his brother with his substance, and the women also and the people. And the king of Sodom went out to meet him, after he had returned from the slaughter of Chodolaomor, and of the kings that were with him, in the vale of Sabe, which is the king's vale. But Melchisedech, king of Salem, bringing forth bread and wine, for he was the priest of the most high God, blessed him, and said: Blessed be Abram to the most high God, who created heaven and earth, and blessed be the most high God, by whose protection the enemies were delivered into thy hands, and he gave him tithes from all. And the king of Sodom said to Abram: Give me the souls, the rest take to thyself. But he answered him: I lift my hand to the Lord God most high, the possessor of heaven and earth, that from a thread to a shoelatchet I will not take from all that is thine, lest thou say: I have enriched Abram, except those things which the young men have eaten, and the shares of the men who came with me.
