centers in the East and West can be uncovered. Much that the documentary, epistolary, and literary sources of church history do not allow us to recognize already emerges from the connections recognizable so far.
Since I wish for my book to have many readers outside the narrow circle of liturgiologists, I have preceded the first chapter with a short overview of the liturgical sources utilized, which will tell the expert nothing new, but will be welcome to many others.
The first sheets were still able to decorate the birthday table of the dearest friend whose name the dedication bears. I can no longer place the finished book in his hand and receive his incorruptible criticism as a reward. Thus, let it be a sign of grateful remembrance of almost 25 years of the most heartfelt fellowship.
