We, the officials, respectfully examine the Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art in nine volumes. It appears to be the legacy of the Baoshi official in charge of educating the youth in the Zhou Dynasty from the Rites of Zhou. It is unknown who transmitted this text. The Yongle Dadian Great Canon of the Yongle Era cites the Gujin Shittong Comprehensive History of Past and Present Events, which states that Wang Xiaotong claimed the Duke of Zhou established the Rites and created the name "Nine Chapters." Its principles are profound and subtle; its format is secretive and concise. Zhang Cang deleted and supplemented the remnants, though his editing of the items differs significantly from the original techniques. Upon examination, the book contains references to the Shanglin Garden of Chang'an.
