Taibo was the eldest son of King Tai. His younger brother, Jili, was virtuous and had a wise son named Chang. King Tai wished to establish Jili as his successor so that the position would eventually pass to Chang. Taibo, understanding this, used the excuse of gathering medicinal herbs at Mount Heng to depart for the region of Jingman, thereby ceding the succession to Jili. The people of Jingman were moved by his righteousness and treated him with the courtesy due to a ruler. He then adopted the title Gouwu, and over a thousand households followed him. After King Wu received the Mandate of Heaven, he posthumously conferred upon him the title of Wu Taibo.
