Boyi and his younger brother, Shuqi, were both sons of the Lord of Guzhu. The Suoyin a commentary on the Records of the Grand Historian notes that the personal name of the elder was Yuan, with the courtesy name Gongxin; the name of the younger was Zhi, with the courtesy name Gongda. The names Boyi and Shuqi are posthumous titles. Because they both wished to cede the throne to one another, they fled together and sought refuge with the Lord of the West. When King Wu marched east to attack the tyrant Zhou, they intercepted his horse to remonstrate against the conflict. After the Shang dynasty was pacified, they deemed it a matter of righteousness to refuse to eat the grain of the Zhou. They retreated to Mount Shouyang, gathered ferns to eat, and eventually starved to death.
