This volume serves as a visual "Who's Who" of Chinese history, focusing on the elite of the Song Dynasty (960–1279 CE).

This list includes the "Five Masters of the Northern Song," the thinkers who laid the groundwork for Neo-Confucianism: * Zhou Dunyi, Shao Yong, and the Cheng brothers (Cheng Hao and Cheng Yi). Their philosophy sought to explain the origins of the universe and the moral nature of humanity. * Ouyang Xiu and Fan Zhongyan were titan figures of the "Scholar-Official" class, known as much for their beautiful prose and poetry as for their political reforms. * Bao Zheng is the historical figure behind the legendary "Justice Bao," a judge and magistrate who became a symbol of incorruptibility and the champion of the common people. * Wen Tianxiang is one of China's most revered patriots. A general and poet, he was captured by the Mongols but refused to serve the Yuan dynasty, famously writing the "Song of Righteousness" before his execution.
