A woodcut portrait depicts the Chinese official Dou Yi. He appears from the chest up. He wears a traditional official cap called a futou a black cloth hat that became a standard part of official dress. This cap features long, flat horizontal wings. Dou Yi has a prominent, long beard and mustache. He is dressed in a wide-sleeved official robe. A decorative belt is visible at his waist. His hands are tucked into his sleeves in a formal, respectful posture.
Dou Yi (914 to 966) was a scholar and high ranking official who served during the transition from the Five Dynasties period to the early Song Dynasty. He was highly respected for his knowledge of history and ritual. His most significant achievement was overseeing the compilation of the first legal code of the Song Dynasty, which established the judicial foundation for the new empire.
