A sun with a Double Embrace original: Chong Bao (重抱); two concentric arcs curving toward the sun signifies a great defeat. An Embrace original: Bao (抱) always signifies harmony, while a Back-arc original: Bei (背); an arc curving away from the sun signifies discord and separation.
If the sun has a Triple Embrace and two square Earrings original: Er (珥); parhelia or "sundogs" appearing at the sides of the sun, and the colors are all yellow-white and lustrous, the Son of Heaven the Emperor will be victorious in battle. The defeated foreign troops will come to surrender. Square Earrings signify military force. An Embracing Earring or a Favorable Earring signifies joy.
Blue-red vapor shaped like the new moon, facing away from the sun, is a Back-arc. Also, a red-yellow vapor like a new moon facing away from the sun is a Back-arc; it signifies treacherous and evil plots of rebellion, and the turning of one's back on moral laws original: Gangchang (綱常); the fundamental Confucian principles of social and ethical order. It is also said: A Back-arc vapor of blue and red that curves outward is a sign of rebellion, signifying a rebellious city original: Fan cheng (反城).
If a Back-arc appears above the sun, the corresponding region will lose territory; there will be rebellious officials and soldiers, and frontier generals will wish to depart. Guard against this carefully. The more Back-arcs there are, the more rebellions there will be. If Back-arcs appear on all four sides, there will be rebellion in all four directions.
