It is said that in ancient times, the famous scholar Aristotle Yàlìsīduō; the traditional Chinese transcription of the Greek philosopher dedicated himself to "investigating the principles of things" wùlǐ; a term used here for natural philosophy or physics. However, he encountered a certain tide whose cause he could not fathom. In his frustration, he threw himself into the water and drowned. A local proverb arose from this: "Aristotle wished to grasp the tide, but the tide grasped Aristotle instead."
One region is called Corfu original: 哥而府 (Gē’ěrfǔ), which measures six hundred li a Chinese unit of distance; approximately 300 kilometers in circumference. It produces wine, oil, and honey of exquisite quality. In every direction, one sees only groves of oranges, pomelos, and citrons; no other trees grow there. The climate is clear and mild, yet it is said that wild birds never visit this land.
Another region is called Hungary original: 翁加里 (Wēngjiālǐ), located to the south of Poland original: 波羅尼 (Bōluóní). Its natural products are immensely abundant; the cattle and sheep found there are sufficient to supply the needs of the entire continent of Europe original: 歐羅巴 (Ōuluóbā).
There are four remarkably strange waters in this land:
1. One springs forth from the ground and immediately solidifies into stone.
2. One flows freely during the winter months, but conversely turns into ice during the heat of summer.
3. If iron is thrown into another, it becomes soft like mud; when smelted again, it transforms into fine copper. This likely refers to the "cementation" process observed in copper-rich mine waters, where iron is chemically replaced by copper
4. The fourth has water of a deep green color; when it freezes, it becomes a green stone that never melts.
Note: Hungary is currently incorporated into Northern Turkey referring to the Ottoman Empire's control of the region at the time of writing, which is why it is appended here.
