...People say that Sengyao's painting possessed a skeletal structure of extraordinary grandeur and a scope of vast ease. His mastery of the Six Principles of Painting the fundamental criteria for judging art established by Xie He was complete, and he should be ranked alongside Gu Gu Kaizhi and Lu Lu Tanwei. Sengyao painted many Buddhist subjects because Emperor Wu of Liang revered the Buddha, and thus Sengyao's work followed the preferences of the time. The works currently held in the Imperial Collection number sixteen:
