...Almighty, and that the good and evil that reaches the servant is predestined, what is there other than surrender regarding the divine decree? To seek help from Him is to repel the influence of the self and its command to evil nafs ammārah the soul that commands to evil from the servant in all his states, and He grants him his goodness and welfare. Therefore, the servant must seek divine guidance at the beginning of all his tasks so that God Almighty may protect him from the danger, defect, and harm of that task. And in God is the success.
Section: As for what I said, that I removed from my heart the purposes that return to the self, the purpose was that in every task where a self-serving motive enters, the blessing of that task departs, and the heart falls from the straight path into a place of crookedness and preoccupation. And that is from two possibilities: either his purpose is achieved, or it is not. If his purpose is achieved, his destruction lies in that, and the key to the door of hell is nothing but the attainment of the desires of the self. And if the purpose is not achieved, at least he has removed it from his heart, for his salvation lies in that. The key to the door of paradise is nothing but restraining the self from its desires, just as God Almighty said: "And restrained the self from desire, then indeed Paradise is the refuge." And self-serving motives in affairs are such that the servant in the work he performs is doing so for other than the pleasure of God Almighty, and he does not seek the salvation of the self from punishment. In sum, the vanities original: "رعونات" of the self have no limit, and its tribulations are not always apparent. In this book, a chapter on this meaning will come in its proper place, if God Almighty wills.
