Perhaps the biographer pawned the Proagon, which was a comedy of Aristophanes, as a tragedy of Sophocles. 65 Aristophanes] Aulus Gellius disagrees N.A. 15.20.8: Alexander Aetolus, however, composed these verses about Euripides:
But the protégé of Anaxagoras, of old possibly a corruption of "archaic", though surly to me
to address
And a hater of laughter, and not even learned to jest over wine,
But whatever he wrote, this he had attained from honey and Sirens.
Learned men did not deny their trust to Gellius, v. Meineke Anal. Alex. p. 247. I do not doubt that there are three anapestic tetrameters of Aristophanes. Gellius used this very life which we have in our hands, nor does it follow from the fact that he brings forward the poet's fuller words that he is worthy of more trust regarding the name of the poet than the other witness. The error of Gellius can easily be explained, if we remember that the arrangement of the tragedies was entrusted to Alexander Aetolus by Ptolemy Philadelphus. Alexander Aetolus did not compose the verses in question, but added them. vs. 1 protégé of old Valckenaer for protégé of ancient, which Bergk changes to protégé of ancient. vs. 3 I believe it should be written he would have written everything of honey and had breathed in of the Sirens. 67 Choirine] Choirine should be read. 68 first play the] play the earlier Kirchhoff, cf. his annotation 71 sqq. wretched — but not] v.
