A monumental woodcut title border. At the top, two nude winged infants (putti) hold up a decorative cloth behind a coat of arms featuring three fleurs-de-lis the heraldic symbol of the French monarchy and a hand emerging from a cloud holding a square object, likely a book. The central title text is enclosed within a large circular wreath of laurel leaves, a symbol of victory and poetic achievement. The bottom of the border consists of intricate interlaced knotwork. At the very bottom center, a small circular medallion contains the name 'HENRI ESTIENNE' original Latin: "HENRICVS STEPHANUS"; Estienne was one of the most famous printers of the French Renaissance.
The scholars mentioned here represent a chain of history: Prosper of Aquitaine (5th century) continued the work after Jerome; Matteo Palmieri (1406–1475) was a Florentine humanist who extended it to the mid-15th century; and his nephew Mattia Palmieri (1423–1483) added further contemporary details.
