OF THE TIMES OF EUSEBIUS
A decorative woodcut initial 'T' features leafy designs and architectural motifs within a square border.
A new table or index of this work by Eusebius concerning times: so that the individual stories and other matters scattered within it or written in various places might be easily found by those seeking them. This is done in a far more skillful and easier manner than was ever found in the old index. The names of things are arranged according to the order of the alphabet, and the number appearing directly across from the name indicates the leaf of the pages. If a period is found preceding the number, it shows the first side The "recto" or front of the page. of the leaf you are looking for. If, however, a period follows that number, it offers the thing you seek to be read on the other side The "verso" or back of the page. of the leaf. However, this must be noted: if mention is made of the same thing or matter on different leaves, multiple or different numbers are not placed next to the same name (as was done before); rather, so that all things are accessible to those looking and all confusion and wordiness are avoided, each term (to speak logically) is given its own proper number, so that they lead the person investigating the histories most clearly to a single leaf and a single page.
A six-line hendecasyllabic original: "Ἑξάστιχος ἐνδεκασύλλαβος", referring to a specific poetic meter of eleven syllables per line poem on the Chronicon of Eusebius to the readers.
In few words I embrace more charming histories,
The succession of kingdoms, and the battles of leaders;
Recalling the disasters and the ashes given to the grave
Of the more fortunate peoples,
And the houses, places, and cities that were built.
Do you wish me to say more? In brief, I weave again all things original: "πάντα" (panta).
A decorative woodcut initial 'A' is formed from rustic branches with two standing figures in classical dress on either side.
