And since man? is this composite living being, one ought not to love this [part] alone, but also his other? part. For even if our? body is the dwelling-place of the soul, one must not neglect? it. For though the body perishes?, yet it is destined to rise again. Take heed, therefore, to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down? with dissipation and drunkenness and the cares of this life, and sudden destruction come upon you. For who among us wishes to lose? his soul? Or who does not wish to be saved? For every man desires the good, and everyone flees the evil. But since the devil? envies the race of men, for this reason he plots? against us and seeks how he might destroy? us. Wherefore we must watch and pray, that we enter not into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
Moreover, I wish you to know that our struggle is not against blood and flesh, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world-rulers of the darkness of this age. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day. For philosophy is the meditation upon death, and especially the hope of the age to come. And the philosopher and true Christian not only despises present things, but also longs for the things to come. For just as? the sun? illumines the inhabited world, so also the grace of the Holy Spirit illumines the souls of the faithful. We must therefore have love for one another, because love is from God, and everyone who loves has been born of God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. In this the love of God was manifested among us.

First of all, therefore, beloved, I exhort you as aliens and sojourners to abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul. Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that in that which they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by observing your good works, glorify God. Submit yourselves therefore to every human institution for the Lord's sake, whether to the king as supreme, or to governors as sent by him. For so is the will of God, that by doing good you should silence the ignorance of foolish men. As free men, and not using your freedom as a cloak for malice, but as servants of God. Honor all men, love the brotherhood, fear God, honor the king.
Servants, be subject with all fear to your masters, not only to the good and gentle but also to the crooked. For this is grace, if for the sake of consciousness of God one endures griefs, suffering unjustly. For what glory is it if, when you sin and are buffeted, you endure it? But if when you do good and suffer, you endure it, this is grace before God. For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow in his steps. Who committed no sin, nor was guile found in his mouth. Who, when he was reviled, did not revile in return; when suffering, he did not threaten, but committed himself to him who judges righteously. Who himself bore our sins in his body upon the tree, that having died to sins we might live to righteousness; by whose stripe you were healed. For you were as sheep going astray, but you have now returned to the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls. Likewise, wives, be submissive to your own husbands, so that even if any are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word through the conduct of the wives, when they observe your chaste conduct in fear. Let yours not be the external adornment of braiding hair and putting on gold or wearing apparel, but let it be the hidden man of the heart in the incorruptible quality of a meek and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.
