The two of them went unwillingly along the shore of the barren sea;
and they came to the huts and the ships of the Myrmidons,
and they found him by his hut and his black ship
as he sat; nor indeed was Achilles glad at the sight of them.
They, in fear and in awe of the king,
stood still, and spoke nothing to him nor questioned him;
but he understood in his own heart and spoke:
"Greetings, heralds, messengers of Zeus and of men,
come closer; you are not at all to blame in my eyes, but Agamemnon,
who sent the two of you for the sake of the girl Briseis.
But come, Zeus-born Patroclus, lead forth the girl
and give her to them to lead away; and let these two themselves be witnesses
before the blessed gods and before mortal men
and before the ruthless king, if ever again
there should be need of me to ward off shameful ruin
from the others; for truly he rages with ruinous heart,
nor does he know at all how to look both before and behind,
that the Achaeans might fight in safety by the ships."
α' Of exhortation; in order that all things may be clear to us, he makes mention by the herald's name; for white [are] the careful mental images; and from the judgment of the future... [gemme]; for the greatest impulse is from the limbs; [melon]; the competitors [say] glory, glory; and I shall say worthy; having deemed worthy, I shall lead the wagon; thus I herald the reward you wish to undertake; it is not, for they say also life; and it is necessary to seek those parts, [my] friend; for indeed I nowhere lack; and now the judgment, and to herald, to lead off; for you are, above; and I blame, the iota is short; whence, since he is clearly neglected in no way, the edition [has] the iota short; and: β' the heralds shall sing, attending because the king himself did not come and [the girl] being cared for; and by name, either slaves: γ' he says [due] to their insolence; for not near but to come; above now where do you look at the part, to whom not of them; and the hope [is] "give," wherefore he did not take; to whom since badly, if someone from the [word] "do" (give); and to be pleased, instead of being pleased. ε' because of the word; from the [word] "not being sent," the composite [form], and "you see" was showing; light, for it is not even of him, for by his own way he would never be sent: ζ' Fearing, they spoke; but it was "and nothing," because of the kingdom; for he does not care, being provoked; nor having attended, in the manner of a slave: η' they two were, they speak of festivals to him; or because from "mother"; instead of "let them not be"; for indeed you shall not follow the same with "le," as "he wailed," and "he grew" of the confirmed; for divine [is he] as [one] of the heralds; for Hermes was declaring from the dew of the herald; whence, you have all as many as
judgment; from which [is] the song of the heralds; to those whom it is recorded to be said: η' for not again from...; for he says he becomes of the friend to seek, by which they say he [seeks] the woman entirely: θ' if not from the [word] "ke"; not from exhorting directly; but from dwelling near as of Heracles; O Heracles: ι' emphatically his grief and pain, he presented you therefore as witnesses of his lawlessness; where also writings have been made; for he says he will not be silent in the future; for he seeks the hand and the outcome of the matter: +
