The two of them went unwillingly along the shore of the barren sea;
and they came to the huts and the ships of the Myrmidons,
and they found him by his hut and his black ship
as he sat; nor indeed was Achilles glad at the sight of them.
They, in fear and in awe of the king,
stood still, and spoke nothing to him nor questioned him;
but he understood in his own heart and spoke:
"Greetings, heralds, messengers of Zeus and of men,
come closer; you are not at all to blame in my eyes, but Agamemnon,
who sent the two of you for the sake of the girl Briseis.
But come, Zeus-born Patroclus, lead forth the girl
and give her to them to lead away; and let these two themselves be witnesses
before the blessed gods and before mortal men
and before the ruthless king, if ever again
there should be need of me to ward off shameful ruin
from the others; for truly he rages with ruinous heart,
nor does he know at all how to look both before and behind,
that the Achaeans might fight in safety by the ships."
