α He tells us of Thebes, the one under Plakos, over which Eetion, the father of Andromache, ruled; these were subject to barbarian tribes before Ilium. Whence Achilles, having sacked this city—either having failed to get others, or specifically finding the aforementioned daughter [Chryseis] during the capture of Thebes—and having taken her from there in the wars. When he came to the Achaeans [with the spoils of] Thebes, having sacked the city, he slew Eetion; but her with the children. With whom, having rushed ruinously into the city from which he took the women, once they had been secured as a prize, the Achaeans divided them among one another. But they did not endure [releasing] Chryses himself, the father and priest of Apollo, on account of his exceptional priesthood, as if a portion had been given to him as well by lot. From which also the god sent a pestilential disease upon the Greeks. Some say that Chryseis was also taken in Thebes; but the word is "pale" in Thebe.
Since we sacked Thebe, the city under Plakos, and brought everything here; and these things we Greeks divided well among ourselves; and they chose for Agamemnon the fair-faced Chryseis. But Chryses, the priest of far-shooting Apollo, came to the swift ships of the iron-armored Greeks to ransom his daughter and bringing a boundless ransom; holding in his hands the fillet of far-shooting Apollo upon the precious and golden scepter, and he entreated the Greeks, and especially the two sons of Atreus, the marshals of the host. Then all the other Greeks cried out in favor: to respect the priest and to accept the splendid gifts. But this did not seem good to the soul of Agamemnon; instead, he sent him away harshly and laid a stern command upon him. The old man went away grieved; and Apollo heard him when he prayed, since he was very dear to him. He sent a destructive bolt against the Greeks; and the hosts died one after another and continually. The bolt of the god went everywhere throughout the camp of the Greeks. But the seer skillfully revealed to us the prophecies of Apollo. Immediately I first urged that Apollo be appeased; but then anger seized Agamemnon. Standing up at once, he uttered a threat, which indeed was fulfilled by the commander. For the bright-eyed Greeks sent Chryseis to Chryse with a swift ship, and carried good gifts to the king. But the heralds, leading away the daughter of Briseus [Briseis] just now from the tent...
...with them, living by himself. For repentance is divine; for God adorns the one who is especially ordered, it is correctly emphasized; unless by race, he is ordered especially by prudence, so that even the golden hopes; for she [says] to me: become.
β And the hatred of another with whom Creon is; he had from Erechtheus' daughter two children, Ion and Achaeus. Ion settled Athens; but Achaeus, having committed a kinsman-murder, went away to Phthiotid Achaea. The woman of the land, as a foundation, adopted the Achaeans for herself. The Hellenes, the current Greeks around Hellas, were named after Hellen, the son of Zeus. Before this, the race of Thessaly did not have [the name]. For not all who were in the city of Hellas were Achaeans. Since, therefore, the affairs of Hellas met great fortunes through the children, from him [Hellen] all were called Hellenes.
γ The daughter of Belos, she seems to have been born from his own blood; of her alone; it is likely she rules. Just as others and some wise men, and there [she is] harmless, this one, the wife of a horse—for that one—but how is it possible, even in jest? But he says it is fictitious, if indeed it is even more difficult for you. +
