Having said all that is publicly and privately? observed regarding our own race and regarding the justice and accomplishments meant for us, we shall leave the majority in silence for now?. Those things which clearly showed that humanity receives this care from God, it was appropriate to seek and to set forth in chapters, so that nothing of the divine holiness might be lacking. Regarding the race of all mankind and the deeds done in the world, in the known parts of the inhabited earth which we have received from time immemorial, we shall record precisely, starting from the most ancient times. Now, regarding how human affairs came to be, both those expressed by the most lawful of the natural philosophers and the historians: for some of them, having posited the world as eternal and indestructible, declared that the human race also exists from eternity, never having had a beginning of its own generation. Others, thinking it to be generated and perishable, said that men, like the world, happened to have their first generation at specific times.
