Under Constantine,
Archbishop of
Constantinople
The testimony then is: these are those testified to by their hope and their patience. For Joseph’s brothers saw him, but they did not believe the vision of Joseph. And not only this, but they also hated him because of his dream. And Joseph, having seen the vision, recounted it to his brothers, and said to them: "Hear this dream which I saw. I thought we were binding sheaves in the midst of the field, and my sheaf arose and

stood upright, and behold, your sheaves, surrounding it, bowed down to my sheaf." His brothers said to him: "Will you indeed reign over us? Or will you rule over us?" And they continued to hate him even more because of his dreams and his words. He also saw another dream, and he recounted it to his father and to his brothers and said: "Behold, I dreamed another dream, as if the sun and the moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me." And his father rebuked him and said to him: "What is this dream which you have dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow down to you upon the earth?" And his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the saying in mind. And his brothers went to pasture the sheep of their father in Shechem.
In the field
And Israel said to Joseph: "Are your brothers not pasturing in Shechem? Come, I will send you to them." And he said: "Behold, I am here." He said to him: "Go, see if your brothers and the sheep are well, and report back to me." And he sent him from the valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem. And a man found him wandering in the field, and the man asked him, saying: "What are you seeking?" And he said: "I am seeking my brothers. Tell me where they are pasturing." And the man said to him: "They have moved from here, for I heard them saying: 'Let us go to Dothaim.'" And Joseph went after his brothers and found them in Dothaim. And they saw him from afar before he drew near to them, and they acted wickedly, intending to kill him. And each one said to his brother: "Behold, that dreamer is coming. Now therefore come, let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits, and we will say: 'An evil beast has devoured him.' And we shall see what his dreams will be." But Reuben, having heard, rescued him out of their hands and said: "Let us not strike him down in his soul." And Reuben said to them: "Do not shed blood. Cast him into this pit which is in the wilderness, but do not lay a hand upon him," so that he might rescue him out of their hands and restore him to his father. And it happened that as Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of the tunic, the variegated one that was upon him, and taking him, they threw him into the pit; and the pit was empty, it had no water.
to him, I revealed it to him; but his testimony is strange and absurd, for he said nothing small or contemptible; but his father kept the saying.
