By Mr. BELIDOR, Colonel of Infantry, Knight of the Military Order of Saint Louis, etc. Bernard Forest de Bélidor (1698–1761) was a French engineer whose work served as the standard reference for hydraulic and military engineering for over a century.
An ornate engraved vignette features a central female figure representing Wisdom or Science, seated amidst books, scientific instruments, and a globe. She is flanked by two putti. Below the central scene is a cartouche with the inscription: "One lives by genius, all else shall belong to death" original Latin: "VIVITUR INGENIO CETERA MORTIS ERUNT". The engraving is signed "Cl. Duflos fecit." There are two circular library stamps visible on the page.
