The seal of the University of Oxford depicts a shield containing an open book. The book is inscribed with the motto "The Lord is my light" original Latin: "Dominus Illuminatio Mea", and the shield is accompanied by three crowns.

The Greater Work Known as the Opus Majus in Latin, this is a massive compendium written around 1267. Roger Bacon sent this work to Pope Clement IV as a proposal to reform the medieval university curriculum, arguing that the study of nature and languages was essential for a true understanding of Christian theology.
