and in the line breaks have been made, in particular, in the letters published from copies. Doubts regarding reading arise, as to the characters, for the t’s which, lacking a crossbar, sometimes resemble l’s, and for certain final vowels; furthermore, in the Latin transcription of Russian names (Jul’ka, Julik) it is not easy to distinguish the I from the J. Certain Sardinian words are difficult to read. In the cases already mentioned of letters to multiple family members on the same date, the following order has been adopted: the mother, Tatiana, Giulia. After the mother’s death: Tatiana, Giulia. The letters to his children Delio and Giuliano, when they are undated and cannot be dated, are published at the end.
The notes inform about the source, as well as any previous editions and their nature. They explain obscure points of the text and illustrate references to facts and people. So as not to weigh down the notes, a complete list of the cited books is provided in the appendix. Furthermore, for the first time, letters from correspondents are used, which are published, in most cases, in excerpts.
